Radiohead release their seventh studio album today and it's only available online and you set your own price. Will you buy the album? Do you buy the idea?
Maybe, I am not sure. I have never knowingly listened to Radiohead, but I like supporting interesting business models.
Do I buy the idea? I am not sure what there is to buy. It is great marketing. The success of failure will really depend on how much value the band provides to the customers. Some will want the band to keep making music and will either send them money for the CD or will go to a concert (or purchase something else). Others, like me, might pay nothing for the CD and will potentially become a fan. As the fanbase grows the amount of people who go to concerts and such increases & that is where label artists really make their money.
Reminds me of this post by TechCrunch.
A while back Jars of Clay released an interesting music video through their myspace, youtube, and other places where they had asked the people who attended their concert to video the concert and then send in the video. I posted about it a while back, but if you missed it you can see it here.
Today I happened to hear on the radio that a band was releasing audio and encouraging people to remix the audio. Well, they teased this and a little later they said it was none other then Jars of Clay.
On the Official Jars of Clay Website they link to another site about a Remix Contest. Where they released multiple tracks of the same song in the video. I have now downloaded it and plan on putting some time, if my muse provides me the inspiration to create something new from these pieces of clay.
This will not be my first time editing audio, since I am podcasting a good bit where we record, edit, master, and release stuff ... and it will not be the first time I have edited a song. There was a song a while back that I heard that artist talk about what the song ment to her and I did not like how the final CD song was ... so I ripped out some of the loud gutars and that is the version I now listen to.
The one odd thing that strikes me with the Jars page is it does not really tell what licence and all they are giving to people. There is no waver, or anything offered. They do mention that each individual track is copyrighted, which is true, anything that is original and created is copywritten under the current US Copyright Laws, but it just seems interesting. Like with Artist Insider (on vox), the individual podcasts are copywriten, but released to the public and in reality people both share the link and the files.
In the end, I am posting and will be promoting Jars of Clay more because of this then I would if I did not have access. I am more excited that more of the music industry is starting to get that you have to love, appreciate, and build your fanbase.
It is great to see a band encourage their fans involvement in their work ... at the same time many bands will not allow a camera with a removable lens in their concert, these guys have created a number more loyal fans.
As far as the video itself, there is some good visuals. I think I understand why they did the cuts as quickly as they did, but it makes the video less enjoyable, almost unwatchable, for me. It also shows how poor a video shot on a camraphone really is and why the record industry should not be worried about armature video taking away sells of their tickets or songs, in the end the fans go to the show for the experiance, not just to hear a music.
Many musicians & entertainers regard one thing as the moment they know they have made it:
On September 26th the world will have the pleasure of another CD released from Weird Al, but you can receive and listen to new music from him now.
Weird Al has now released three of his songs on his mySpace page, and two of them are downloadable, one was released a many weeks ago and then another a few weeks ago. Then in the last couple days he released one to mySpace, but no download as of yet.
You're Pitiful
This will actually not be on the new CD, so instead they released it to the world and linked to many mirors. I am not personally a fan of the song because it seems too depressing, but I could see it making some people happier when they are down in the dumps, because the song talks about a really pitiful person and not many people are at that point. Then again, if you were to that point, having it pointed out would be important.
Don't Download This Song
This one is comical in part because Weird Al is allowing and encouraging people to both download the song and watch the vidieo. It really is making fun of the actaions of the *AA companies (that would be RIAA, MPAA, etc). Of the three, this is probably my favorite, though "White & Nerdy" is pretty good too.
White and Nerdy
This is great because of all the referances in the song. I could see a lot of cool music vidio options for this. Either having Weird Al doing a rap, this would be typical for his vidios, but better might be a combination of him raping and slideshow.
The full lineup for this CD, Straight Outta Lynwood, is:
- White & Nerdy
- Pancreas
- Canadian Idiot
- I'll Sue Ya
- Polkarama!
- Virus Alert
- Confessions Part III
- Weasel Stomping Day
- Close But No Cigar
- Do I Creep You Out
- Trapped In The Drive-Thru
- Don't Download This Song
I know some people who like Derek Webb, so I thought I would pass along this interesting bit from him.
Beginning today you can go to FreeDerekWebb.com, fill out a short form, and download his newest CD titled Mockingbird. That is 11 songs for free in a higher quality MP3 format.
Good business move?
For many the question might be, how could this be a good business more? Well simply put artist don't make a lot of money off selling individual CDs or Songs. Rather what most need is to build a fan base and get free publicity. I had known about this free offer for a couple months now, I even put a note on my calendar, and set it up to receive an email reminder today. I thought I would only get one song, but rather the whole CD is nice.
Looking at his page, you have to provide a valid looking email address. Then at elast five additional valid looking email addresses. Then you receive the fee download and they ask you if you might be willing to donate some money to one of three African focused non-proffit organizations.
- get more people listening to his songs, or Market Penetration
- build email list, so when he comes to your area you will receive an email about the concert
- spread the message he has in the songs
