Mike Hammock, an Economics Professors who I respect and have read for years, wrote a great piece about unions inspired in part by the current writers strike.
I agree with everything he says and he makes important points most do not take into account or know. Here is a great part from the long post:
Unions can serve an important role in communicating information from low-tier workers to upper management. They may have lower transactions costs of coordinating certain kinds of worker activity than other forms of organization in some industries. If left to the competitive marketplace, we would only expect unions to survive in those areas where they are socially beneficial (again, absent any special protections).
He then goes on to blast the idea that "Unions we have in the USA" = "automatically good".
I encourage everyone to read it.
::: Update :::
A follow-up post has been posted. I am not finished reading all of it, but, so far, this has been the most interesting thought:
Bryan Caplan argues that it can be rational for you to hold incorrect beliefs, because there is no consequence for being wrong, and holding a belief can make you feel good. For example, it might feel good to believe that businesses are part of a conspiracy to oppress workers, and that only unions can counter them. It is wrong, but why should you bother to have a different view? Holding a more nuanced view (that labor unions are sometimes valuable, and sometimes not, and that worker exploitation is not likely to happen in competitive labor markets) would require costly study on your part. It might also make you less liked by your friends, or cause you to feel guilty for giving up your support for the little guy. (As it happens, I support the little guy too, but I don't think unions are the way to help him).
E-Myth is the book I suggest for people who have any through of starting a business. It is well worth the read, but I know it takes time and energy.
This weekend I worked on listening to much of my backlog of podcasts, I try to keep some around because it is easy to run out. I was listening to Real Life Real Estate Investing, a radio program on a public radio station that is repackaged and released online for free.
The guest on the June 21st was Michael Gerber, author of The E-Myth Revisited. There was at least two point that I was not sure where he was going or was disappointed, but all in all it is an interview I plan on listening to again and taking notes.
Send me a message if your organization needs any help knowing what options are available.
Many musicians & entertainers regard one thing as the moment they know they have made it:
On September 26th the world will have the pleasure of another CD released from Weird Al, but you can receive and listen to new music from him now.
Weird Al has now released three of his songs on his mySpace page, and two of them are downloadable, one was released a many weeks ago and then another a few weeks ago. Then in the last couple days he released one to mySpace, but no download as of yet.
You're Pitiful
This will actually not be on the new CD, so instead they released it to the world and linked to many mirors. I am not personally a fan of the song because it seems too depressing, but I could see it making some people happier when they are down in the dumps, because the song talks about a really pitiful person and not many people are at that point. Then again, if you were to that point, having it pointed out would be important.
Don't Download This Song
This one is comical in part because Weird Al is allowing and encouraging people to both download the song and watch the vidieo. It really is making fun of the actaions of the *AA companies (that would be RIAA, MPAA, etc). Of the three, this is probably my favorite, though "White & Nerdy" is pretty good too.
White and Nerdy
This is great because of all the referances in the song. I could see a lot of cool music vidio options for this. Either having Weird Al doing a rap, this would be typical for his vidios, but better might be a combination of him raping and slideshow.
The full lineup for this CD, Straight Outta Lynwood, is:
- White & Nerdy
- Pancreas
- Canadian Idiot
- I'll Sue Ya
- Polkarama!
- Virus Alert
- Confessions Part III
- Weasel Stomping Day
- Close But No Cigar
- Do I Creep You Out
- Trapped In The Drive-Thru
- Don't Download This Song
I know some people who like Derek Webb, so I thought I would pass along this interesting bit from him.
Beginning today you can go to FreeDerekWebb.com, fill out a short form, and download his newest CD titled Mockingbird. That is 11 songs for free in a higher quality MP3 format.
Good business move?
For many the question might be, how could this be a good business more? Well simply put artist don't make a lot of money off selling individual CDs or Songs. Rather what most need is to build a fan base and get free publicity. I had known about this free offer for a couple months now, I even put a note on my calendar, and set it up to receive an email reminder today. I thought I would only get one song, but rather the whole CD is nice.
Looking at his page, you have to provide a valid looking email address. Then at elast five additional valid looking email addresses. Then you receive the fee download and they ask you if you might be willing to donate some money to one of three African focused non-proffit organizations.
- get more people listening to his songs, or Market Penetration
- build email list, so when he comes to your area you will receive an email about the concert
- spread the message he has in the songs
